Made of Awesomeness

Friday! Filler! Grab a cuppa tea.

Last night Mighty Reader and I went to a midnight showing of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1." It was amazingly made of awesome and I don't care if you've read the books or not* or seen the first six films or not: you have to go see this one. It's the absolute best one yet. The cinematography, costumes and direction are great. The special effects have leapt forward in realistic portrayals of whatever you can imagine. It's all I can do to stop myself from talking about it and giving things away. Just go. Do it.

Has anyone else seen it yet? Does everyone plan to go?

*I confess that I've read all seven books, and I can't for the life of me remember much of anything in them. So almost every scene in the film was like-new for me, and that added to the awesomeness. Mighty Reader has a much better memory, especially for details, and she's also just re-read The Deathly Hallows so there are changes and omissions, I tell you in the spirit of full disclosure, that might upset you if you're a true Potter fan. Me, I just thought it was ubercool.

  1. Quiet, Potter nerd! Glowing reviews make it inevitable that I'll be pulled to this film.

  2. I haven't seen it yet . . . that may be what I do this evening after meeting friends for margaritas, or, I might go watch it while Frank is immersed in the NFL on Sunday. Hmmm . . .

  4. Scott, it is rare, rare, rare that I've ever heard you rave about a movie! This means that I MUST go see it! I'm a Potter fan, but like you, even though I've read the books multiple times, I never remember them. The plots kind of all run together. The only reason I remember plots at all is because the movies. But, I am like this with most books. Goldfish memory.

Can't wait to see it! I just need to get a free night and a babysitter and tickets...

  5. Yet to read a single word of a single Harry Potter novel, but I have pretty much enjoyed the movies and I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

  7. I've read all novels but don't think I will be dissapointed with any on-screen changes. The story has so much to offer in plot lines, a tweak in its movie script still offer the suspense and conflict we love I'm sure!

  9. Scott, it's great to see you supporting small, independent films. I'm sure this publicity will really help the movie.

(I've got my ticket for Saturday.)

  10. I hope to see it soon, if I can handle the crowds. I'm not big on crowds.

I read the first book when it came out, thought it was okay but not enough to get the second one. Ignored the movies, too. And then one day I was at a different movie where they showed the "Prisoner of Azkaban" trailer. Man. That was some trailer, 'cause it not only made me want to see it, it made me want to read the books.

I think, overall, they've done a fabulous job with the films and I'm *so* pleased they managed to keep most of the major players throughout.

I know of your and MR's love for the Majestic, but did you know it's playing at the newly refurbished Cinerama? *Ooh*. I saw the midnight premier of "LOTR: The Two Towers" there back in the day, and it stands far far above any other movie-going experience. Well, except for the sweeping panorama scenes which set off my vertigo. But hey, all in a good cause.

  11. I am going to wait till the crowds thin out before I venture into the theater. Even convinced the resident 10-year old Potter expert to wait. No small feat, I tell ya.

  12. i saw it last night. there was lots if internal struggle. great effects, set design etc, but one thing that i can't stand is shakey cameras! hold the camera still or I'll get sick. Still, i'll buy it and watch it a hundred times just like the other ones. The bond will never break.

  13. phyllis: Yeah, there are some handheld cameras and I guess they're going for a documentary sort of feel in those shots. It didn't bother me but I did notice it.

  14. I agree, Scott. Best one yet, all the way around. I watched all the previous ones in anticipation of this one, and everyone and everything about it is richer, subtler, darker and deeper.
