Cocktails at the Literary Lab

This is the Official Beverage of the Literary Lab: the Moscow Mule. Here's how you make one:

Pour over ice:
1 1/2 shots vodka (we're using Bardenay vodka)
Juice of 1/2 fresh lime
Cock(e) & Bull ginger beer to fill glass

Traditionally these are served in copper mugs, but as you see, we made ours in 200ml Pyrex glass beakers.

Tomorrow: Phase 1 of the Heather/Eels experiment!

  1. What should I do? I don't drink alcohol, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Malasarn. Sigh. You can't kick me out...can you?

  2. Scott, is this something you prepared for yourself recently? The beakers are a nice touch!

Michelle, your membership is secure, seeing as how it's your blog too!

  3. Michelle, it's almost as good without the vodka. Anyway, Domey and I can be the Official Drinkers of the LL. You can be the Official Non-drinker. Or the Designated Driver. Either way, you are integral to the proper operation of the Lab, Mrs. Argyle.

  4. Domey: Mighty Reader mixed the pictured drinks this Saturday after an exhausting afternoon at a massive plant sale. We didn't find the tree of our dreams but we did find some nice bistro chairs at an estate sale on the way to the plant sale. Also, I rented an Element for the day, and that's always fun.

Anyway, we have a lot of lab glass at our house. For, um, legitimate scientific experiments. Still seeking a practical use for the ring stand I bought last year.

  5. I don't have a Bunsen burner. But I've thought about making a percolator out of a round-bottom flask.

  6. Can anyone get in on this conversation? I notice it's JUST Lit Lab folk. Although, I could become an honorary member. *wink*

Uh, er, I feel a headache coming on. Call me a dufas, but I didn't think you were supposed to mix the two. Okay, I really AM a dufas. :-)

  7. I don't have vodka, but I have some gin. I don't have ginger beer, but I have bottled ginger juice + regular beer. I do have lime.

Will tell you how my concoction tastes tonight. It's 6 p.m. somewhere but it's noon here.

  8. Robyn, the ginger beer is a soft drink and doesn't actually have alcohol in it, to the best of my knowledge. So, it's okay to drink and to mix as you like!

Yat-Yee, I'm not an expert, but I will wager that your drink won't quite be as tasty. :P

  9. I'm sure you're right, I should try to find me a bottle of ginger beer.

  10. Robyn: Like Domey says, the ginger beer is like root beer and has no alcohol.

Yat-Yee: I think gin, ginger juice and lime could be okay if you top it off with sparkling water. The ginger and lime work really well together.

Mighty Reader and I think the Moscow Mule will be our 2011 summer drink. But that makes us sad, because we'll miss the aviations and the Last Words and the cucumber martinis and the Cosmopolitans. This really makes us sound like a couple of old lushes, but we are not! We are middle-aged!

  13. So it turns out I REALLY a dufas. Huh. Go figure. I guess you can tell, I only drink wine. :-) Might try this some time though.

  14. Robyn: Full disclosure requires that I admit that Mighty Reader and I were frustrated for some time when we weren't able to find ginger beer on the beer shelves at our local grocers. We finally asked someone and he walked us to the soda/water aisle. "Oh," we said. "It's not really beer."

  15. We call it ginger ale. But the US kind is wimpy and nowhere near as good. English ginger beer was a revelation. It didn't need any alcohol. (Although I found it rather nice with rum.)

  16. Anne, we have "ginger ale" in the US as well as "ginger beer." The ginger taste in ginger beer is much much stronger than it is in ginger ale. I never actually think of ginger when I drink ginger ale.

  17. Well, I guess that leaves us underage folks up a creek without a paddle.

  18. You underage folks will be of age soon enough. And then for a while you'll have fond memories of being underage. And then you won't remember at all what it was like to be young and everyone from the age of 30 on down will look like a child to you and you will know you are old. So enjoy being underage while you can, I say.
