Happy Birthday, Davin!

Just wishing a happy birthday to Davin! I've known Davin for years, and I'm very happy and honored to be friends with him. He's one of the best writers I know, as well as one of the best people.

I hope you have a fantastic day, Davin!

By the way, below is a picture of Jane Choi holding a tray of caneles in the best restaurant in Atwater Village--Canele. (If any of you cool peeps ever come visit me, this is very likely where I'll take you.) I got the picture from here.

Jason King of Genre Wars fame also just sent me this cool photo! Thanks, Jason. And, yes, my book is an alcoholic. Buy it. Rescue it.

  3. That's what all of Gradka's meowing has been about; she wants to wish you a happy birthday, Davin! (And get Scott to work on decorating your cake. Which looks delicious.)

  4. Thank you for the post, Michelle! I like the balloons. And thanks to everyone for the good wishes! Last night I cooked with a real vanilla bean for the first time in my life. Is it sad that I get really excited over that? And, this morning on the bus I was reading about a group of people on an island shaped like an egg. I'm off to a good start on the day. :)

  5. Happy Birthday! I hope you have a beautiful day, Davin. Complete with whatever scrumptious dessert you prefer to celebrate with (vanilla bean something?).

  6. Carrie, Tonight I'm attempting to bake little treats called caneles. Earlier this year or last year or something I vowed to become a better baker, and I've decided to focus on caneles. I've spent hours reading about them, taking notes, and trying to bake them! This will be my fourth batch in about two weeks!

  7. Happy birthday, Davin! And may all your caneles turn out perfectly!

  8. Yat-Yee, I cleverly chose a food that is celebrated for its imperfections. Every canele is uniquely deformed, just like those little white jiggly-headed tree spirits in Princess Mononoke.

  9. Happy birthday, Davin. May your day be full of sloths on aprons.

  10. I will be checking my apron all day long for the sloths. Sometimes they can be very late.

  11. I'm new here, but I want to also wish Davin a hapy birthday because it coincides with mine. In true Scorpio fashion I honour a fellow member of such distinguished order. :-)

    Greetings from London.

  15. Happy birthday, Davin! May all your caneles be imperfect, and may all your apron sloths get along with the jiggly-headed tree spirits from Princess Mononoke. Once they show up, that is.
