I do not have cholera

Happy Monday, everyone!

I had planned a different post, but this morning it didn't seem very good. Instead, I will just say that I am reading Love in the Time of Cholera, and this morning a lot of people were staring at me on the bus because I was smiling so much. It has been so long since I read One Hundred Years of Solitude, and I am reminded again of how much I admire Gabriel Garcia Marquez's talent.

Oh, and you tell me if this is a sign of low self-esteem. I had my writer's group meeting this weekend, and after I read my scene to the group, two people said something to the effect of "So, you just made this up all on your own?" and I took it as a grand compliment.

Oh and oh, I am spending a lot more time trying to come up with a real title for Cyberlama. Here are some ideas. Let me know, please, if any of them strike your fancy...given that you probably know nothing about the book other than the fact that the Dalai Lama is in it, and all of the main characters are 350 years old.

The Ancestors

The Monuments

The Reincarnation of Diana Foster

A View From Lhasa

The Perfect Distance

  1. I would have taken those comments as a compliment...I think. Sometimes it's hard to tell. What was the tone of their voice, their facial expressions, etc. :)

My favorite title is The Perfect Distance. Something about that draws me in! I can't wait to read that book. :)

    1. Michelle, the group members expressions were that of sincere surprise. It was sort of funny. :)

  2. I kind of like 'A View From Lhasa'. I'm struggling with a title for my own WiP, even though I'm way into the process of editing and should have one by now.

    1. Eric, If it helps, you can call your book Cyberlama for a while. Trust me, the lameness of that title will motivate you to find something else!

  3. Not knowing much about your book, I'm choosing titles that intrigue me so I'd want to read the book: The Perfect Distance and The Reincarnation of Diana Foster are my picks.

    I kind liked Spiderlama too.

    1. Ooh, learned a new cool slang word today so I don't always have to say cool. Or kewl.

    2. Yat-Yee, Spiderlama will always make me think of Spiderpig, and that just won't work.

  4. I like The Reincarnation of Diana Foster. And I would take your group's comments as compliments no matter how they meant them.

I was smiling on the bus, too. I'm reading Dickens. It's so good.

    1. TJN, The Monuments was actually the first title I came up with, and I am still attached to it. It would be sort of nice if I ended up going with that one!

  6. I like A View From Lhasa.

I loved LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA and still have it here on my crowded bookshelf. Oh, and that was definitely a compliment!

    1. Yvonne, I'm not very far into Love, but, wow, the scenes I have read are amazing. He's has a little bit of Virginia Woolf in him, I feel. And he mixes it with some glorious fantasy.

  7. I so want to read both of those books. And yours too. And yes, I would say that it was a compliment.

As for the title -- I like The Monuments. But as I was looking at all the titles I thought The View From Perfect Reincarnated Monuments was kind of fun.

    1. Anne, Lucky for you I'm not above revising my story to fit such a lovely title. And by lovely, I mean crazy.

    1. Liza, My only fear about this title is that people will think it's about running. :)

  9. I like The Perfect Distance and The Monuments.

    Of course, I also like:
Three Hundred Fifty Years of Dalai-Tude
    Resistance (to Suffering) is Futile
    and
Harry Potter and the Cybernetic Dalai Lama.

So I wouldn't trust my recommendations.

    1. Jabez,
This is not your first attempt at thinking of Dalai Lama related titles is it? Maybe I should tweet to the Lama directly and ask him what he thinks?

    2. That's an excellent idea. The Dalai Lama and I are friends on facebook.

    3. Scott, Can I tell him I know you to get my foot in the door?

    4. Oh, yeah, totally! Remind him he owes me $5, too.

    5. Another $5? That crazy guy. Will he ever learn he can't beat you in a drinking game?

    6. He keeps coming back for lessons. He's patient, you know.

  11. I personally like Old Guys. It's the title of my favorite British Comedy and my favorite line from MIB.

    1. Chuck, My writer's group has been calling it the half-people story. They don't even listen to my other suggestions for titles.

  12. I like The Ancestors or A Perfect Distance. I don't like The Reincarnation of Diana Foster. It sounds tacky somehow. No clear consensus, huh :)

I wanted to adore Love in the Time of Cholera but it struck me as so incredibly sexist that I just couldn't get into it. I only finished reading to see if it concluded in as sexist fashion as it started. But I think I'm in the minority with that view!

Can't wait to hear more about your WIP, Davin.
